*** S. Korea Airline Unions Mull Strike***
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - South Korean airline and airport employees
on Wednesday threatened to go on strike to protest against the cost
of commuting to work at a new airport due to open next week outside
Seoul. The unions of Korean Air, Asiana Airlines and Seoul's Kimpo
International Airport said their 16,500 members will not report to
work at the Incheon International Airport when it opens on March 29.
The unions of Korean Air and Asiana Airlines cover only ground and
clerical workers, not pilots. The workers are unhappy with what they
say are prohibitively expensive tolls on the highway that provides
the only access to the new airport, which is located 32 miles
outside Seoul and was built to replace Kimpo at the city's main
international airport. In protest they will report to work at Kimpo
airport instead on opening day. They plan to begin a full-scale
strike on April 2 unless the government accepts their demands to
reduce highway tolls.
