Just for clarification since you don't mention it - not only do the TTFs need to be used within a year of original booking; but also, the TTFs are each tied to the passenger's name - i.e., you'll have TTFs in 5 different people's names.
And if you combine them with new money, all expirations become equal to the soonest of any of them. I fell into that trap once, long ago.
If a similar situation came up now, I'd likely just forget the $5.60 or whatever.
