Why would you assume your status will follow you?
That is question that should be directed to the BA forum.
Regarding the 2 programs, if you have status

1a. If you are OW Sapphire or above with AAdvantage, status based lounge access is not available for travel that is within North America, and other places.
(Mexico City is an exception)
1b. If you are OW Sapphire or above from another carrier, those restriction on lounge access do not apply
2. Awards using BA Avios incur fuel surcharges
3. Awards using AA miles only incur fuel surcharges if the partner carrier requires them (Like an AA award and flying BA)
4. My understanding is BA is more restrictive on mileage earning and elite qualification than AA
