However his reason was not the airmiles but simply the cost. According to him it was just cheaper this way than brazil-NY. It was a very odd reason but since the checks yielded no result, he was free to continue his world trip.
I know that used to be possible when air fares were set via treaty, and some currencies depreciated faster than fares could be adjusted. (Round-the-world tickets bought in Africa for the equivalent of $100 or so.)
I didn't think that was still the case, but I don't follow all the mileage run forums.
