Hi Seattle1,
I do this flight once every month (including just last week). I have also tried flying from Rome to another European city and then on to Singapore.
Note that some of the information people have written above is incorrect. The aircraft is the 777-200ER (re-fitted). Not the standard 777-200.
I also note that some people are talking about the business class seat, when you ask about economy. In my opinion, the economy seat on the 777-200ER is more comfortable for sleeping than on the A380 as it's a little softer. I notice also an extra inch of legroom or so. However, yes, the TV screen is smaller and quality not as good.
In the European summer months, the flight is 3x weekly, but from late October for the winter months, the flight becomes 2x weekly.
Note that I think it is not worth flying to another European port for the following reasons (other than extra cost). Rome airport recently had a fire and the terminal where Star Alliance flies from is still a mess. Thus, internal flights (ie. Lufthansa, Swiss, Turkish, etc), often depart late from Rome (in these recent months), making a connection to SQ in another port a little risky in my opinion. Also, I just don't think the A380 is worth the extra time to get to another port + the risk of losing luggage + long passport control queues in Frankfurt and Munich at the times for these connections. I've done it before and came to the conclusion to just take the flight from Rome direct (where possible).
With Star Alliance, you could take:
- Rome 18:45 to Singapore 17:15 (via Frankfurt with Lufthansa/Singapore)
- Rome 19:55 to Singapore 0:25 (via Seoul with Asiana)
- Rome 19:55 to Singapore 18:10 (via Zurich with Swiss)
- Rome 18:55 to Singapore 18:15 (via Istanbul with Turkish)
Note that the SQ flight to Istanbul arrives after 05:00, at 05:45. So, not much difference to the flight from Rome.
Hope that helps somewhat
