The new Japanese tourist isn't completely different from the ones who have long roamed the globe, cameras slung around their necks, often as honeymooners clad in matching polo shirts.
Increasingly, however, Japanese travel abroad out of a thirst for exposure to something new.
"Who needs the city? We can't stand the traffic," says Katsumi Kimura, 69, who has traveled with his wife to Switzerland, New Zealand, Australia, Canada and Alaska since his retirement a few years ago from Meiji Life Insurance.
