A quick internet search says the same thing... actual pay starts when the door closes.
Agreed about expectations. As I said several posts ago... AA lists it as a benefit. So it is quite reasonable for you to expect it. One could go as far as to say it is part of the price. (At the very least, it is factored into the cost.)
