Just encountered the new site for the first time yesterday. Gosh, it's really bad. Indeed, I agree with the commenter who said that the old site was preferable even cosmetically: the new one has the look and feel of Windows 8. I've only tried to use the new page for a couple of paid reservations, so I have not yet encountered some of the dysfunctional features noted by others in this thread, but why on earth do they now ask you whether you want to see how many miles you'll get for the trip, with the default answer being "No"? Surely the number of customers who will want this information is greater than those who will not want it, and it doesn't take up much space so I can't imagine anyone objecting to it. But United's preference for not showing this information seems quite strong: a couple of times I chose "Yes" and then went back and made unrelated changes in the proposed itinerary, only to find that the web page had re-defaulted to "No" so that I had to start over again in order to see the mileage. Quel désastre.
