The Deh Cho bridge opened three years ago. NWT Hwy 3 is all-season to Yellowknife. It is far more economical to move most freight by road than by air.
I believe it's less about a few fly-in jobs (the diamond mines, for example, run charters) and perhaps more to YZF being a collection point for small northern communities and the simple fact of distance from anywhere of consequence.
