Try using multi-city to book what you want, or look for it on a travel site like Kayak or google flights. This is called broken ticketing AFAIK (putting one-way fares back to back to make a longer trip). It's totally legal, so make it work and save the money.
But wouldn't ITA show this as a "round-trip fare" if it were such? I can't replicate on Kayak, Hipmunk or AA.com multi-city, and the Ex Plat agent I spoke to also only got M and G inventory. Interestingly, my corporate web booking tool is behaving like ITA (pulling the S inventory when the two legs are combined, M and G when separate), but unfortunately I need to upfare to V for the EQPs in this case, so the corporate tool isn't going to work.

edit: corp. travel agent was able to upfare into V. Less than ideal though because upfaring isn't exactly kosher... but at least it's way cheaper than the nonstop ($450 when <14 days out)

DTW-CLT-MIA is $141 and MIA-DCA is $134. As they are both on AA you would be protected.
DTW-MIA-DCA is painful enough compared to the 1hr DTW-DCA nonstop . I can't leave DTW early enough to do DTW-CLT-MIA anyway. But appreciate the help!
