IME the left side provides better views on approach regardless of whether you're landing from the east (HK Island) or west (SZ Bay). Regarding the California coast, as someone else suggested, this time of year, chances are that it will be out of view pretty quickly. In either case, we're only talking about 30 minutes of semi interesting stuff to look at ---> it doesn't matter.
