We didn't see the credit for the flight show up on our accounts so we called United and were told that we weren't getting credit for the tickets because they were S-class.

We had talked to Air NZ multiple times as we were booking the tickets, at the airport flying to/from New Zealand and reconfirmed that our numbers were on the reservation and we would receive credit for the flights. NO ONE told us our tickets were not eligible for mileage credit.

Anyone have any advice for how to get credit for this flight?

Thanks!
Like what many has already said, you should've checked with the Airline FFP you are crediting towards - in your case United - before booking your flights to make sure they will be in an eligible booking class. Air NZ in this case (normally) wouldn't be able to give you a response, let alone a correct one.

Unfortunately only Economy fare classes: Y, B, M, H, Q, V, W, T will earn Premier Qualifying Miles.

A bit late now for you, but, you know for next time.

P.S.: Pretty much if you want/need to be safe, you'll want to go for the Economy Flexi (fully Flexible) tickets. Everything else will most likely earn you nothing, sale fares (or Economy Saver on NZ's US website) you can almost guarantee to be in a non-earning fare class towards UA.
