Generally, telling the agent that you are evaluating if the card is worth keeping will work. Sometimes you have to say "I want to close my account" and then see if you are transferred and if not, tell the agent you aren't sure yet and to not cancel it.

If this is an Aviator card, then consider that you can't open a new one, and that the silver card comes with 3x AA miles for AA purchases before you do cancel.
