So is there no such thing as flexible economy?

I'm sorry if this sounds daft and I've totally misunderstood what flexibile means, but in trying to book a ticket for Christmas I've become a bit bemused.

This Christmas I've decided not to go home and told my mum if she wants to see me she has to come to St. John's. The problem is she's very busy and can't commit to specific dates so she asked if there are any "flexible" options that can be changed later.

The answer I've come to the conclusion on is no. I priced up a return from Dublin to St. John's in latitude for the Christmas period. Having read the small print, the change fees for this flight is 120 Euros plus fare difference each way.

How is latitude therefore flexible and what purpose does latitude serve?
