DL to AA connection after end of interline agreement. Need advice?

Hi,

Travelling from NRT to LAX on DL arriving at Terminal 5 connecting to AA flight in Terminal 4 to RNO. And vice versa. I know the need to collect bags and pass customs at LAX going to RNO. But I have to do it again coming back from RNO to NRT with no interline agreement.

How to transfer quickly from T5 to T4 and vice versa with check bags? Would 3 hours be enough? Have travel insurance provided by company.
