I just got back from my local Walgreens and I asked when they'd be taking chip cards. The cashier told me it would happen at the end of the month and he pulled out a sheet of paper that he said was their training on chip cards. At the top of the sheet it said that they would start accepting chip cards on September 30th. I looked over the sheet a little and there wasn't anything else on there except for some boilerplate training on how to process chip cards. The cashier then told me what he knew about processing chip cards and he had it right except for the part about when to take the card out. I explained to him that you're supposed to leave the card in until the machine tells you to remove it and that if you take it out too soon the payment won't go through. Hopefully the cashiers are able to figure this out without too much trouble.
Btw, the store removed the slot covers a little over a week ago.
