A friend and I (both American passports) will be flying into HCMC via Tokyo NRT on December 24, 2015. We are immediately flying to Bangkok the next morning (less than 12 hours in HCMC) and are wondering if we can avoid a a full fledged visa.

We will be back into Vietnam before we fly back to US in January, but we want to avoid buying a multiple entry visa if at all possible to save money. I read about a $5 transit visa but was wondering about how to apply. I know we can do a 1 month single entry VOA online for the second time we enter Vietnam.

If we have to we will do a multiple entry 1 month VOA but would like to save money!
