Speaking of that, other countries apparently think that American merchants ask for ID fairly often for purchases:

You may be asked to show a picture ID.
When using a U.S. debit card, for added security, it is quite common to be asked to present your photo ID at the point of sale. This is done for your protection as well as for the merchant’s protection to help prevent fraud.
I mean I get asked occasionally but I don't think that happens that often. Maybe it's the places I shop at?
