Your other alternative would be to find a row of three seats which are all free, purchase an infant ticket for an additional seat and ask UA to seat you an your husband in the aisle seats, with one of your children in the middle seat. That way, it cannot given to another passenger at check in, and your family can comply with the safety regs.
Why can't they purchase the entire row DEF so that they will be the only four in the row section and not have to worry about a fifth person entering the row? @:-)
