I have to say, it is nice that AC is enforcing the paid seating. It means on occasion I get a comfortable seat with an empty one beside me. It actually feels like I'm getting some sort of benefit.
UA is interesting, because while they are vigilant I've still often had luck just asking for a seat with space and having them put me on E+. When it's really mattered I've paid. It's all about value against the ticket though. If your flight is $500 are you willing to spend another 25-30% for extra leg room? I find the incremental cost to be a bit much at times.
