Just priced SAN hotels for 24 Jan one night. Hilton Harbor Island SOLD OUT. Hampton Inn Downtown SOLD OUT. Doubletree Mission Valley SOLD OUT. Hanalei BW Mission Valley SOLD OUT. Hilton Mission Valley SOLD OUT. Best Western Oldtown SOLD OUT. Marriott Suites $259. Marriott Mission Valley $159 (no hotel shuttle). Hampton Inn/Mission Bay SOLD OUT. Hyatt Islandia $205.

You get the picture... a return check gave us Hampton Inn/Mission Bay at $98! Yay! Booked!

Problem: Hertz wants $300 for the week's rental car from the airport that was $140 last week. Struth.

So, we book a hotel night (flight gets in at 10:30 PM), then a car from DOWNTOWN the next day: now only $160 for a week, plus hotel = $260, plus 10,000 Hilton points on winter promotion.

Whew. (My wife's aunt can't drive at night, hence can't pick us up from the late flight.)
