IME an overstuffed roller bag is a problem but otherwise a legal sized one is fine.
I had thought so too but couldn't remember. I do recall one plane where a normal rollaboard would not fit, but the shorter, wider Tumi did fit. I hadn't planned on bringing (and do not need) a small hand carried item, but if I know the bag will get gate checked then I will (to keep laptop, etc. with me).
