I'm just hesitant to put $40 out if the batteries go dead in a few hours; no reason to expect that would change ...

Other opinions / perspectives would be welcomed. I think I would love this if it really worked and I was an excited early adopter when this was first announced.
I bought the lifetime service a while ago and I'm happy with it.
My batteries do last a while - usually I can get quite a few days (almost a week) out of them. I've forgotten to turn off the unit for a day or so after I landed, and I was still able to use it for the flights back.
