I would assume that you cannot travel on your current passport.

If USA, get yourself into a Passport Office (located in about twenty major cities) ASAP with current passport, photos, credit card, and completed renewal form from the Dtate Department website. They can get you a new passport in person in one business day if necessary for the $60 additional expedite fee. You will need to show proof of travel (printout of itinerary and ticket receipt, plus hotel confirmations if applicable) to get the super fast service.

If you cannot get an appointment through their system, GO ANYWAY ASAP. When I renewed mine recently, there was a signposted short line for those without appointments.
