I'm confused. You had an award ticket using DL miles on a DL flight and cancelled it closer than 72 hours before departure? Normally the miles would be returned to your account if it's more than 72 hours before departure (and lost totally if it's less than 72 hours before departure), where there is currently no expiration (until you die).
OTOH if you paid for the ticket with money, then the one year deadline to use the credit would apply and normally cannot be extended.
Do you have status with DL?
