I assume "Customer Service" means you called Corporate. Try again, this time with the manager of the location in question.

Either this is a customer practice at the location (and the "return" notation was missed at check-in), or the employee doesn't grasp the established practices and needs to be educated.

In either case, if the manager values your business, he'll process an adjustment.
