Yep, you can not book online using your own points for a friend without your name being the lead guest. Supposedly the ultra correct way is to have IHG do the booking for you so reservation can be in your friends name but booked with your points (of course then no chance of friend benefitting if you have higher elite status)

However most simply do what you intend, which is book online adding in the additional guest name

1. You must ensure your search is for multiple guests in room, eg 2Adults (not the default 1Adult), else only additional info field is provided and additional guest field is not available

2. After selecting room you usually get two screens and these days instead of 2x boxes for a)additional information & b)additional guest name, as you proceed to complete the reservation

there is just a line of words which you have to click on to get the box where you should enter your friends name
Then the additional guest can check in without you being present
