Sitting in vomit?

Recently I went to sit down for a 14 hour flight with my 1 year old baby and two children for long-haul flight back to NZ - one of three flights to get back home. We sit down and we start to smell something pretty disgusting like VOMIT. Then we look around and there is still someone's vomit all down the back of the seat in front of us (between the two seats also). It was not cleaned at all and was even caked over the television screen of the man sitting in front of us - it must have been serious projectile vomiting! The kids and I were almost sick ourselves at the smell. I ask to move.....but no....these cabin crew were relentless at making me stay in my seat (the plane is very full and they do not want to move a tired mother and three kids). But I couldn't sit there - there was vomit everywhere, it had half-dried and slid down between the seats. My one year old is touching everything at the moment and the hand goes always in his mouth. In the end, I had to stand up, half-crying (already 10 hours without sleep on the previous night flight and transit from Paris) and ask others in my cabin if they could help me. I ask, is it acceptable to let children and passengers be exposed to vomit on any flight (not accidental exposure)? isn't there some saftety regulations or something to stop this from happening?
