While I do prefer it this way (too many times I've booked a preferred seat only to end up with the row full of Tangoers, with plenty of empty seats at the back), I imagine it can create a headache onboard.

Yeah, United FAs often have to manage this with a whip and a chair. Especially in the South, common to see every seat in Y full while Y+ sits mostly empty.
...guess they don't want people cheapening the Economy product!
