You can individually be split off the pnr to form a new pnr. Then you can cancel only yours for free. No reason to be concerned with the inventory going away.. I agree that all of this should be done together because I've encountered resistance to have more than one travel companion moved to C+ when not on the same pnr.
As the comment above states there is concern with award availability if he cancels. If it's booked in elite fare class he must be flying as an award or the rest of his group no longer have access to elite award fare bucket pricing. Of course this assume that it's booked into an elite fare class bucket and not normal award fare class.
