Ah, the kind of thread that brings out the pedant in me! The statement as made by the airlines is true: in a greater than zero number of cases, the nearest exit is ("may be" is an even better hedge) behind. The proposed alteration might or might not be true, depending on the degree of symmetry of the placement of the exits and the arrangement of the seats.
