I am hearing it was the HP compressor that let go. I don't think that has happened too often in the past. There was an Airworthiness Directive issued a few years ago for an inspection to prevent this happening but it was for a slightly different model of GE90. My money was on the turbine letting go. Stopping turbine blades coming out the side is difficult and even worse if the disc fails.
I have only ever had one compressor let go and the blades were contained but came out of the bleed valves. It was a 14 stage compressor, the first 4 stages were damaged but the remaining 10 stages were all gone.
I don't think it is even a requirement.
14 CFR Part 33 says damage must be contained if the most critical fan/turbine/compressor blade faisl at max rpm, but nothing about a full disc/shaft failure.
