United late last month started replacing the Smisek introductions on those videos. A United spokesman said the move was completely coincidental to Mr. Smisek’s departure, and that the airline made the change to allow time after the existing safety video for a preview of a new, more whimsical one that it plans to fully roll out this fall.

The change means that for the first time in five years that Mr. Smisek isn’t greeting customers on video.
