The embassy is not at all a reliable source of information. There are many, many posts over the years here about embassies giving out wrong information. The most authoritative source would be the Saudi Foreign Ministry http://www.mofa.gov.sa/sites/MofaEN/Pages/Default.aspx or even better the division of police who man the airport immigration.

It's a risk I would not take, but good luck!
