Duty free - an excuse to short check baggage?

When on my Dublin to Honolulu run/holiday, coming back via LAX, I did wonder if there was a way around the ban on short checking in of luggage...

If I check in luggage all the way through to Dublin, It stops me getting alcohol on duty free. I can buy it in LAX, but they'll give it to me, and it will be my hand luggage as I'll be going through security in T5. Then taken from me.

So, will asking for bag to be short checked so I can repack my duty free booze I haven't yet bought, work in LAX? Maybe they'll need a proof that I've got a positioning flight? I can say I'm working in Dublin at the moment....

Or will they find a way around this, such as pack my duty free all way through to Dublin. I'd be surprised...
