I see the SDC flexibility as one of the best and most valuable parts of purchasing a FC ticket. And often I don't see enough of a difference in fares to risk not being confirmed on a flight I know is viable at the time of booking (could just be my route patterns).
I would expect they could revert to the former policy of needing a seat in your fare class. Some here on FT had good luck with getting confirmed without their fare class available, but I never got a break on that one. I considered it a most welcome change.
