In my experience, they only block out seat selection the day of departure, if the flight is full or almost full, or while seating is reassigned following a change of equipment. I've never had seat select disappear prior to an equipment change, or at least not that I've noticed. So it could be that the 787-9 was just subbed in and seat select will reappear once they reassign everyone's seats?
