I don't necessarily disagree with you, but people do panic and how you behave when you panic is often outside of your control. Nobody knows how they'll behave in that situation until it happens to them.
However, if someone deliberately and consciously took their carry-on with them, then yes they are selfish and should have a long hard look at themselves.
