If rail out of London sounds iffy, you can get bus service out of the Victoria Coach Station, just a block down from the Victoria rail station. I've used the buses here to get up to Windsor before, and they seem to have routes to just about anywhere you would want to go outside of London (or even up to Scotland, but the 8 hour trip to Glasgow or Edinburgh is definitely more than a day trip).
