Funny...my perspective is that Heathrow Express's prices are fair considering you can reach Paddington Station in such a short time. I no longer consider the other options; Heathrow Express has offered me the swiftest, least stressful trips I have ever had from LHR to "central London."
I agree with LAX/EXP...let your treks between Heathrow and London be a breeze and deal with the Underground during your stay when you're not toting luggage and have not been up all night flying. And don't forget to look for special offers that appear from time to time on the Heathrow Express site. You might be able to save even more if you buy your tickets online, provided there is enough time for them to be mailed to you. I have always bought my Heathrow Express tickets online and have usually received them in Chicago 5-6 days (including weekends) after placing the order.
Whichever transportation you choose from LHR, hope you have a wonderful trip!
