I was fortunate to discover the area years ago by staying in a hotel very close by (the Hotel Imperial, back when they charged RM 69 a night). The hype hadn't really built around it yet, and that's probably what's important here. I'll treat it as a place where it's possible to get a pretty good Chinese meal and maybe wash it down with some shandy if you're too cheap for the suds. Food turnover is obviously high, and at least on some days and in low season the restaurants are very competitive for business. OTOH, if demand is higher than supply (such as on Chinese New Year), THEN you have practices like just adding 10-20% to prices because demand is higher (you don't GET anything more, you just pay more).

The great thing about Bukit Bintang in general is that there's so much you can walk to. So even if you draw a blank on plan A or plan B for some reason, you can still try The Ship, places in Sungei Wang center or Plaza Low Yat, or any number of other things.

Will also have to be honest about Malay food...I haven't really taken to it and don't think a lot of foreigners will. You have things like satay that are pretty simple and others like nasi lemak or nasi goreng that might work, but your typical place has lots of things to spoon out of metal trays that don't seem terribly appetizing. Though if memory serves there's a 24-hour Malay place at one of the intersections in the back streets of BB.
