If, because of your condition, you want the flexibility to get a refund when an airline makes a relatively minor schedule change, then you must purchase fully-refundable tickets, which are likely much more expensive than what you purchased.
If a schedule change is significant or results in an illegal connection, then you would likely be able to get a refund on a cheap, non-refundable ticket (at least, from some airlines).
