Gold -> Platinum. What to do with expiring upgrades?

I was planning to trade almost all my award points to reach AY+ Plat from Gold (150000p -> 50000p). I don't have time to travel on my free time, so don't really need the award points for anything but upgrades. Now with Plat I get equal amount of upgrade vouchers than I would by buying them with award points + all the perks..

The thing is, that I don't have any flights scheduled before my tracking period ends this month! None that wouldn't be business class already anyway.. So I'm just going to loose all the vouchers?

Of course I get new ones right away when new tracking period starts, but seems like a terrible waste..

I could just buy random flights to Asia, but how would I know if there's any upgrade quota left? Would they tell me on the phone?
