My wife has an American passport, I have a German one and the kids have both. We always use the EU line as a family and never had a problem. The only thing to avoid are the automatic passport control stations.
This is allowed if you are married/de-facto, but not generally for non-EU passport holders travelling with EU passport holders. Of course, the level of enforcement differs between EU entry points.
