Sad that I wouldn't get any credit for a regular United flight from GVA to EWR

Why would this happen?
The main reason this happens is due to IT defects in UA's customer facing software.
If you bought a ticket on a UA flight from UA, you will get some miles based on the purchase price and your Mileage Plus status.
