U.S. Legacy Carriers and the 3 Gulfies

An interesting piece on the bottom of today's Wall Street Journal opinion page about the U.S. legacy carriers and the 3 Gulfies. Noted is the new Emirates flight from Dubai to Orlando that started last Tuesday. The three U.S. legacy carriers want these flights stopped so that the U.S. government will help increased prices from Asia and the Middle East. I have written before that DL, et al. need to offer new aircraft, better interiors, better service, and better food and drink so that people will not be tempted to use Gulfie metal.

Ten days ago I purchased a ticket from here I live--an hour or so from both ATL and DTW--to Doha, Qatar. I am an DL guy and like the break in AMS, rather than going directly from the U.S. So, my route is via DTW and back via ATL. If there were not Gulfie competition, the cost would be much higher, but my round trip ticket on DL and KLM is just over $1,000.

So, for me and others, the Gulfie competition is welcome.
