They wait in the area you find yourself in after getting spit out of the system. The new airport is efficient, and well-controlled. The driver's job is to find you - a lost passenger is lost income!

I'm certain the company can tailor the journey to suit your requirements, or arrange driver+car while you are in Hanoi. Just email the request: mine were all met cheerfully and by return.

About seeing things in Hanoi: you really will do yourselves a favour by looking up Hanoi Kids (http://hanoikids.org). It's an organisation that offers free tours of the city by bright young (mainly) university students anxious to meet visitors and practise language skills while promoting their city. The organisers try to match the guides to the visitor and his/her background/interests. The kids (usually a pair of them) will pick you up at the hotel, work out exactly what you want to do, then take you off to do it. Of course you'll have to pay for taxis, any entrance fees and refreshment stops, but the your young hosts will do all the arranging. Everything is scrupulously above board, and if you want to make a donation to the organisation, that's entirely up to you.
