The “Best” Airline? As far as T&L readers are concerned

The world’s best airlines, says a recent poll in Travel and Leisure, are Singapore, scoring 89.7, followed by Cathay Pacific and Swissair (tied at 80.6). The highest-ranking domestic line is Midwest Express, which, at a score of 77.5, would rank seventh on a combined list of domestic and foreign lines.

Among the domestic lines, Alaska placed second with a score of 67.8; differences between the next seven (Hawaiian, Aloha, United, Delta, American, Midway and Continental) were small, with scores ranging from 57.1 to 60.6, and TWA rounded out the top 10 with a score of 55.2. Similarly, the differences among the remainder foreign top-10 lines (Virgin Atlantic, Qantas, Air New Zealand, Thai, Japan, SAS and Lufthansa) were small, ranging from 78.7 to 74.4.
