15.40 arrive LHR. Proceed to J check in area to 'bag drop'. Told (and by told I mean lied) that my laptop bag must have a yellow tag attached. When I ask why he says "it's to let crew know it's hand luggage". I've already upgraded myself from Club to an Exit row and decide I can't be bothered to argue. In any event, by 16.00 the tag is lost at security.

Why be argumentative with a member of staff, who is only doing as he is told.. and tbh its part true its hand baggage that needs to go under the seat in front except in an exit row. (or if your first to row 2 and back in CE then the under middle seat is fair game :-) )
As others have said let them tag it and leave it on, as theres a chance you will be tagged again at the gate..
remember the phrase "treat others as you want to be treated yourself" as in this instance you have come across as a bit of a DYKWIA
