Jalan Alor is one of those places that people and some websites recommend visiting. But, to be honest, I came away distinctly unimpressed [you can find the full review with photos

For tourists who haven't been to Asia before and want that "local" experience, where restaurants are touting for your business - sure this is not bad. But, mostly, they aren't even hawkers; they are restaurants. For those who have been to Thailand, this is just a normal street. By the way, although I say "restaurants", these are all still pretty much open air and open to the street --- so if you see a bit of dirt, that's normal. And flies? That's also normal!
On top of the fact that these aren't really hawker stalls, I didn't see a single local eating here --- you can hear lots of European languages spoken. If you want a truly authentic Malaysian food experience, this is not the place for you.
The only positives are that it is often difficult to find a whole lot of different local food, reasonably priced and in one location; and that the seafood is cheap and fresh.
Don't come here for a genuine local experience. Do come here for the selection of food.
I ate satay, char kway teow, bbq stingray and chendol. What made the satay good was the pieces of fat they put in between the meat - however, the meat was bit stringy, possibly due to overcooking. The char kway teow was reasonable (with very large prawns) but the flavour wasn't quite right --- as I ate it, I wasn't able to work it out; maybe it was the wok hey. The stingray was actually not bad; and I really enjoyed the sambal served with it. And well, chendol, that's what it is --- sweet and sickly and delicious!
Summary --- touristy, but cheap food in a single location
Would I go back? No
